Fethiye is set on a large sheltered bay backed by the Taurus mountains. On a warm and sunny winter day while you are sipping at your Turkish coffee or drinking a cool Efes whilst sunbathing along the coast, these huge (6560 ft) mountains will astound you with their beauty with pine trees at their skirts, white snow and mist on their summits.
Fethiye is a popular resort of great charm and beauty where Turkish life and tourism exist side by side. The houses of the old town look down on the lively port and market town from a hill crowned with a fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes. At Fethiye (the ancient Lycian settlement of Telmessos), there are impressive rock tombs cut out of the steep rock wall virtually in & just above the town, there is also an impressive amphitheatre right by the harbour.
A smart palm-lined promenade borders the harbour, which is shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. In the old town behind, a maze of cobbled streets contains an abundance of colourful shops, bars and restaurants. Look out for new or antique carpets, leather goods, spices, genuine (& genuine imitation) designer clothes, Turkish Delight and gold and silver ornaments and jewellery.

Located at the centre of the town, the market place is a fascinating sight where all kinds of fresh vegetables, herbs, fruit, fish, meat and dairy products, as well as local handicrafts, are offered for sale. Don't miss the fish market where you can choose and buy your fish fresh from the boats and have them cooked immediately complete with fresh salad, bread & coffee for around £1 per person. The Doner kebabs - available all over Fethiye - should also not be missed, delicious chicken, beef or lamb freshly cooked with salad in bread or pitta for just 40p or so. In the Fethiye area your money goes a long, long way.
Tuesday is market day when farmers from the outlying areas arrive with an absolutely staggering array of fresh produce. There are also many stalls with amazing bargain buys. You will certainly impress all your friends & family with your extremely generous presents of designer gear.
